On 7 June 1917 the Battle of the Mines or the Batlle of Messines broke out.
Soldiers from New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Great Britain fought on the allied side. Captain Robert C. Grieve was part of the 37th Battalion AIF and fought at Messines. His action near the current military cemetery
Bethleem East Cemetery
near Messines during the battle were a testimonial of enormous courage. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military distinction for soldiers from Great Britain and the Commonwealth.
On Sunday, 9 July 2023 a memorial plaque for Captain Grieve VC was unveiled on the market square of Messines.
